Reach Out and Read Program

Reach Out and Read (ROR) is a national, non-profit organization that promotes early literacy by making books a routine part of pediatric care. ROR trains doctors and nurses to advise parents about the importance of reading aloud to their children. The program also gives books to children at pediatric well check-ups from six months to five years of age, with special focus on children growing up in poverty. By building on the unique relationship between parents and medical provides, ROR helps familes and communities encourage early literacy skills so children enter school prepared for success in reading. Many children who fail in school start out with reading difficulties. Therefore of all parent-child activities, reading aloud provides the richest exposure to language

Since 1991, the Reach Out and Read model has been studied by academic investigators in a variety of settings, providing an extensive body of peer-reviewed research on the effects of the program.
